We advise that you do not carry the following items in your checked baggage:
  • Items that are fragile or perishable
  • Jewellery, watches or similar valuable items
  • Computers or personal electronic devices
  • Stored data on items such as a hard drive or USB drive
  • Cameras or delicate camera equipment
  • Medication or medical equipment
  • Important documents including your passport, visa, certificates, or business documents.

If you arrive at the airport with luggage that is fragile, already damaged or inadequately packed, we will ask you to sign a Limited Release Baggage Tag. This means that we will not accept any liability if your baggage or contents are damaged during transit.

If you discover that your baggage or its contents have been damaged during your flight, please let us know straight away by visiting the arrival desk at the airport. You’ll receive a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and a letter outlining the damage.

Take your baggage to the company of your choice to repair the damage. UPLOAD your letter along with the receipt showing the cost of the repair, and we’ll contact you as soon as we can to handle your claim. You may also consider leaving the damaged back at our office and we arrange to have it repaired before returning it.

There are some instances that we are unable to accept liability for loss or damage to your baggage. These include:
  • Loss or damage that has been accepted under the condition of the Limited Release Tag (LRT)
  • Items that have been confiscated by airport authorities or security personnel
  • Damage to locks
  • Damage to zip sliders
  • Loose wheels
  • Damage to side handles
  • Minor dents or scratches
  • Damage to baggage that is more than 5 years’ old

If you have not reported your lost or damaged baggage before leaving the airport, please contact Uganda Airlines in writing, attaching all supporting documents within 7 days of arrival. We will assess the claim and notify you accordingly.

For any baggage enquiries, please contact the Lost and Found Department number in the given form.

Baggage Prohibited Items (Dangerous Goods)

For the safety of our passengers and aircraft, passengers are prohibited from carrying the following items in either checked or hand baggage:

  • Explosives, munitions, fireworks, and flares
  • Security-type cases/boxes incorporating goods such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnics
  • Compressed gases (flammable, non-flammable, or poisonous) such as butane, propane, aqualung cylinders, lighter fuels, or refills
  • Oxidizing substances such as bleaching powder and peroxides
  • Flammable liquids such as paints and adhesives
  • Flammable solids such as safety matches and articles which are easily ignited
  • Poisons such as arsenic, cyanides, or insecticides
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Corrosive materials such as mercury (which may be contained in thermometers or blood pressure gauges,) acids, alkalis, and wet cell batteries
  • Any other substances which, during a flight, present a danger not covered above, such as magnetized, offensive, or irritating materials
  • Lighters (butane, absorbed fuel, electric, battery-powered, and novelty lighters) are not to be carried in the carry-on and checked baggage
In addition, passengers are not allowed to carry the following items in their hand baggage for passengers’ safety and security reasons. To minimize inconvenience, you are advised to check-in or put these items in your checked baggage instead.
  • Knives (including hunting knives, swords, and pocket knives)
  • Scissors and any other sharp/bladed objects (e.g. icepick, nail clippers) considered illegal by local law.
  • Do ensure that all your bags are properly labeled, both inside and outside. Include your full name, home and destination addresses and telephone contact information, and remove old destination tags and labels.
  • Any liquid over 100mls.
Interim Relief and Compensation

In the case of a missing baggage a passenger is entitled to immediate relief fund (Amount based on destination of travel) while the team is tracing the bag. After 21 days if the bag is not found then a passenger will be compensated as per Article 21 paragraph 2 of the Montreal Convention below. The interim relief allowance is not applicable for passengers arriving to their resident destination, Nationals or passengers missing one of two bags.

  • 15.4.1 We will not be liable for damage to unchecked Baggage unless such damage is caused by our negligence. We are not liable for any damage arising from our compliance with applicable laws or Government rules and regulations or from your failure to comply with the same.
  • 15.4.2 Except in the case of an act or omission done with intent to cause damage or recklessly and with knowledge that damage would probably result, or where you have made a special declaration of interest and paid any fee required by us, our liability in the case of destruction, loss, damage or delay of Baggage shall be limited as provided by the Convention, i.e.:
  • 15.4.2.1 where the Warsaw Convention applies, the applicable limit is normally taken to be 17 Special Drawing Rights per kilogram for checked Baggage and 332 Special Drawing Rights in the case of unchecked Baggage, provided that if in accordance with applicable law different limits of liability are applicable such different limits shall apply. If the weight of your checked Baggage is not recorded on the baggage check, it is presumed that the total weight of the checked Baggage does not exceed the applicable free baggage allowance for the class of carriage concerned.
  • 15.4.2.2 where the Montreal Convention applies, the applicable limit is 1,131 Special Drawing Rights per Passenger (or any such sum as provided under Article 21 paragraph 2 of the Montreal Convention).
  • 15.4.3 We are not liable for any damage caused by your Baggage. You shall be responsible for any damage caused by your Baggage to other persons or property, including our property.
  • 15.4.4 Except to the extent inconsistent with the convention, we shall have no liability whatsoever for damage to articles not permitted to be contained in checked Baggage under Article 8.3, including fragile or perishable items, items having a special value, such as money, jewelry, precious metals, computers, personal electronic devices, negotiable papers, securities, or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents, or samples.

EXEMPTED SPORTS EQUIPMENT

Golf Clubs
  • We have a flexible baggage policy on sports equipment, just make sure it weighs less than 32kg and is no longer than 300cm. Most sports equipment can be included as part of your baggage allowance, and if you’re flying with golf clubs, you can take one golf bag for free, in addition to your checked baggage allowance
  • You can carry one set of clubs for free, weighing up to 15kg. This is in addition to your baggage allowance. One set may consist of clubs, balls and one pair of golf shoes. If you’re carrying a golf umbrella separately, this will count as an additional item and fees may apply
Scuba Diving Equipment

Scuba diving equipment can be included as part of your baggage allowance as long as they do not exceed the maximum dimensions of 300cm. A set of scuba diving equipment includes:

  • Buoyancy control device (BCD)
  • Scuba regulator
  • Face mask, fins and snorkel
  • Tank harness
  • Tank pressure gauge (pressure-sensitive devices may need special packaging: the manufacturer will be able to highlight any specific packing requirements)
  • Weight belt
  • Cylinder tank (must be empty and presented at check-in for inspection)
  • Spear guns and harpoons are not permitted in your checked or cabin baggage without approval. You must obtain the relevant permits from all countries that you are visiting or transiting through at least seven days before your journey. For your health and safety, we recommend you pack your diving equipment in hard or padded case. We do not accept liability for your equipment whilst you travel
Bikes

Bikes can be included as part of your baggage allowance as long as they do not exceed the maximum dimensions of 300cm. Make sure your bike is carefully packed in a protective case or bike box. Before you travel, please remove or fix the pedals inwards. The handlebars must be fixed sideways, and tires deflated to reduce the risk of damage. If you need to carry additional parts, you may be required to buy additional baggage.

Water Sports & Surfboards

You can take surfboards and water sports boards as part of your checked baggage allowance. They must be no longer than 300cm, otherwise they must be carried as cargo and charges will apply. These includes: -

  • Surfboards
  • Wakeboards
  • Wave skis
  • Boogie boards
  • Skim boards
  • Paddle boards
  • Speed boards
  • Kiteboard / Kitesurf
  • Keels, kedges, and/or fins must be removed or properly protected
  • You will be charged excess baggage fees if you exceed your overall baggage allowance

Uganda Airlines is not liable for any damage.

Fishing Equipment

You can take a set of fishing equipment as part of your checked baggage allowance. They must be no longer than 300cm, otherwise they must be carried as cargo

A set of fishing equipment includes:

  • Two rods
  • One reel
  • One landing net
  • One pair of fishing boots
  • One tackle box
  • All equipment must be carried in one package

You will be charged excess baggage fees if you exceed the agreed weight.

Feedback
